Granted Patent Counts by Metropolitan Area
Patent counts are calculated using an “inventor’s weight”, meaning co-inventors living in different metropolitan areas receive a share of the patent the invented. A weighted count allows for the sum of all the weighted counts to sum to the total of patents for that period.
How share weighted counts are calculated:
Example 1. Assume a patent has a single inventor in Boston, MA, the Boston metropolitan area count is increased by 1.
Example 2. Assume a patent has one inventor in Boston, MA and a second inventor in Charlotte, NC, the Boston metropolitan area count is increased by 0.5 and the Charlotte metropolitan area is increased by 0.5.
Example 3. Assume a patent has three inventors, two inventors in Boston, MA and a one inventor in Charlotte, NC. The Boston metropolitan area count is increased by (0.3333+0.3333)=0.66667 and the Charlotte metropolitan area is increased by 0.3333.
Patent Application Year
The Metropolitan Patent data set includes all USPTO patents granted beginning from January 1, 1976 through June 30, 2018. The data is indexed using the year of the patent application date indicated on the patent.
IMPORTANT NOTE: A significant drop in metropolitan patent counts can be observed beginning in about 2015. It is not the case that patenting rates have actually dropped off significantly, rather a substantial number of patents filed within the last 5 years are still in review at the USPTO.
Metropolitan and Micropolitan Definitions
The Area definitions are based on the Office of Management and Budget BULLETIN NO. 18-03 and the Census Bureau’s Core based statistical areas (CBSAs), metropolitan divisions, and combined statistical areas (CSAs). The datasets below implement the April_2018.xls version. A micropolitan dummy has been included to indicate an area is a micropolitan area (0=Metropolitan, 1=Micropolitan).
